The nearest sand to the Heathercliff gate has been off-limits since Sunday, and there is no date on the reopening. For anyone who bought into Point Dume Club because the walk to the water was five minutes and downhill, that is a real change to the weekend. It is also, on closer inspection, the moment the park's other two beach doors quietly become the point of the address.

The short version is that the pay gate at Westward Beach Road is where the coastline gave way, not the neighborhood above it. What actually closed, and why the bluff went first

Los Angeles County Beaches & Harbors closed Westward Beach Road beyond the pay gate and the Point Dume Beach parking lot on Sunday, August 2, 2026, with no estimated reopening date. The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert shutting down Westward Beach Road at Birdview Avenue. Restrooms 1, 2, and 3 remain closed after erosion damaged the water line; temporary chemical toilets and hand-washing stations have been placed nearby.

The reason it happened this fast is the reason it matters going forward. The closure is along a stretch of coast where beachfront homes were destroyed in the January 2025 Palisades Fire and the seawalls from those properties no longer protect the shoreline, leaving the coast more exposed to surf. Powerful southerly swells generated by Hurricane Genevieve fueled the conditions this week. The bluff edge is unstable, with drop-offs of up to 8 feet in some locations.

Free two-hour parking is available at the top of Point Dume, with no parking in residential areas. The headland trail is a separate access from the closed beach lot; the top of the point has not been part of the erosion story.
• Paradise Cove, at the eastern edge. Paradise Cove has a restaurant on the sand at the eastern edge of the point. It reads as a destination rather than a habit, but for a Point Dume Club owner it is roughly ten minutes by car and offers exactly the kind of sit-on-sand afternoon that Westward used to host.

A household that treated Westward as the front door and the other two as occasional variety now has two very good front doors and a village. The change is real, but the substitution is close to one-for-one.

The pattern to notice is that Point Dume Village is not a shopping trip. It is the same set of stops residents already make on a normal Saturday, which means the closure changes the beach question without changing the rest of the day.

The routine that does not shift

August at Point Dume Club has always sat between two calendar events that anchor the year, and neither is affected by what happened on Westward. Point Dume is a place to watch California gray whales during the December to mid-April migration. From late winter into spring the viewing platform is one of the better shore-based whale-watching spots in the county, with gray and humpback whales, including newborn calves, passing close on their coastal migration. That trail up the headland from the top is not the same asset as the beach at the bottom, and it is still there.

The other fixture, the Zuma Beach Triathlon, runs six dates in 2026 from July through September, with training all summer at Zuma Beach, and the run course winds past the cliffs of Point Dume. The event uses the main Zuma entrance and PCH, not the closed pay gate, which is why it has not been affected.

The closure at Westward is the story of the week, but the more useful reading for a Point Dume Club owner is longer. The park's coastal position sits above the bluff, not on it, which is why the erosion story is playing out below the neighborhood and not through it. The value that drew people into the park in the first place, the walk to the water and the walk to the village, is intact along two of its three axes. The third will come back on the county's schedule, and the mechanism that has to be solved before it does is engineering rather than weather. The park itself, at 29500 Heathercliff Road, was built in 1970 and has 297 sites, which is a small enough number that the substitutions people make in August tend to become the substitutions the whole community makes by September.
